While in Emmetsburg, visit the world's
only BLARNEY CANNING FACTORY. The cannery has been fraught with many and varied problems
since it first went into production in 1962. Due to the potency of the Blarney
ingredients, the plant chemists were forced to provide a neutralizer. The repellant what
is now being processed has proven to be very effective.
At one point, a massive labor strike caused the plant
shutdown at a most crucial time, shortly before the big St. Patrick's Celebration and
during an election year. On several occasions the promotion parade float was stolen and on
another the important green dye, imported from Ireland, was held up because of an airline
strike.
Faced with all these problems, a lessor facility would
have closed its doors. But as of today, the plant employs two shifts daily in preparation
for the annual Irish Fest on March 13, 14 & 15 in Emmetsburg. You may prefer a product
not so strong; Light Blarney is now being made for the not so bold individuals. |

Designer, C. L. Nicholson has once again transferred the
features of the Robert Emmet statue to the 1998 commemorative Irish dollar. His head is
held high, but tousled hair, garment open at the throat, lips slightly parted, eyes
observing the throng, all express the distress etched on Emmet's face.
Stars and Shamrocks, symbols of unity, current month and
year, numbers of the issue along with the initials of the artist, also appear on the
obverse side. The patriot's name, his birthdate, and the year of his death are included
there.
On the reverse side of the coin, the United States flag
is crossed with the Irish flag, indicating unity. The words "Iowa's Irish Capital,
Emmetsburg, Iowa" appear below the flags. Sister City of Dublin Ireland, Irish Dollar
circle the edge of the coin while a shamrock appears on either side.
Starting out as a short term promotion in 1966, the
popularity of the medallion has continued for 33 years with collectors in all parts of the
world.
This is the longest running consecutive
issue of municipal souvenir coins in the United States |
